40th Cleveland Challenge Cup Of Bocce
Post Tournament Review

It's officially been a week since the 40th Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce came to an exhilarating end! The dust has finally settled, and many teams are already gearing up for the next big tournament: MVR in Youngstown, Ohio, from September 17th to 21st. But before we shift our focus, I want to highlight CCCoB40 one last time and give final recognition to those who made it to the biggest stage of bocce. If you're reading this newsletter, you already know the tournament has crowned a new Cup of Bocce Champion! Congratulations to 3 Men & A Puppy — Mike Trivisonno, Doug Carter, Pino Rosati, and Ron Reheer on their successful run through the tournament and capturing their first CCCoB Championship together!
In this newsletter, I want to recap the 40th CCCoB Finals, highlight the Top 16 teams that made it to Championship Sunday, and share some fun stats from the weekend. Reaching Championship Sunday is a significant accomplishment, especially when competing against 104 teams from all over the country. These teams deserve recognition and respect for their achievements. While only one team can claim the title, the other 15 teams undoubtedly had a phenomenal weekend and should be proud to represent their bocce clubs and communities.
Finally, I want to compare the Top 16 teams to my prediction newsletters posted before the tournament. Where was I spot on, and where did I miss the mark? Which teams dominated as I predicted, and which surprise teams slipped under the radar? To see the full Luciano’s Bocce Lounge Report CCCoB40 Edition Preview, click the link below. LET'S BEGIN!!!

40th Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce Finals Recap
On Sunday, August 25th, a new champion was crowned at the 40th Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce Open Division in Wickliffe, OH. "3 Men & A Puppy," a mostly local team from the Lake County, Ohio area (with Reheer from Pennsylvania), won their first CCCoB championship, emerging from a field of 104 teams in one of the biggest bocce tournaments in the country. They took home the Cup along with the top prize of $9,500. The team consisted of Mike Trivisonno, Doug Carter, Ron Reheer, and team captain Pino Rosati. They defeated BSB from Ellwood City in the finals, 16-11. The BSB (Big Shot Bob’s) team included Matt Taylor, Robert “Duey Stuey” Stuart, Anthony Capogreco, and Dante DeLisio.
As the sun began to set over the Wickliffe Italian-American Club, two teams stepped onto Court 2 with a large crowd eagerly awaiting the biggest match of the weekend. A new champion was about to be crowned, as the previous year's defending champion, CPF Home Inspections from Mentor, OH, had been defeated on Saturday night.

Dante DeLisio of BSB | Doug Carter of 3 Men & A Puppy | Matt Taylor of BSB
Early in the match, both teams appeared shaky, with players rolling short and missing shots in the opening frames. Neither team could really capitalize on any early opportunities. It wasn’t until the 4th frame of the Finals that BSB found a spark, making their first major strike with a big four-point frame. Capogreco & Stuart's hit-and-stick shots set up DeLisio and Taylor to finish the frame, allowing BSB to carry momentum into the next frame, extending their lead to 8-3.

Pino Rosati of 3 Men & A Puppy | Anthony Capogreco of BSB | Mike Trivisonno of 3 Men & A Puppy
The five-point lead was a wake-up call for the undefeated "3 Men & A Puppy," who realized they needed to get moving before the game slipped away. A key roll by Reheer and a shot by Carter regained control of the pallino for 3M&P, which they carried into the next frame, scoring three points after a BSB misfire moved the pallino into 3M&P's advantage. After each team posted a big frame in the first half of the Finals, the game settled into a back-and-forth battle, with both teams going point for point. 3M&P's Pino Rosati and BSB's Matt Taylor were locked in a duel of precise pointing, each trying to set up their team for the highest probability of winning each frame.

Anthony Capogreco shooting in the 40th Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce Finals
After the 11th frame, BSB led 11-8, aiming to win the match and force a "Winner Take All" game 2 in this double-elimination tournament format. Historically, in the past eleven years, the winner of game 1 has gone on to win the Finals each time. Although a Game 2 had been forced three times, the winner of game 1 had always prevailed in the second game as well. Knowing this, 3M&P was determined to avoid a second game, as recent history would be against them. Down 11-8, 3M&P soon found a consistent rhythm that helped them push towards victory. Rosati continued placing his balls consistently next close to the pallino, applying pressure on BSB, while Carter's shooting cleared the path for Trivisonno and Reheer to anchor the line up, whether they needed to roll in or shoot out the final ball of the frame. This combination of sharp shooting and precise pointing helped them put together an 8-0 run in the final five frames, clinching their first CCCoB title.

3 Men & A Puppy celebrating their first Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce Title
In the final frame, it was Carter's roll off the side wall for a bank shot that scored the last two points of the tournament. As the final ball was thrown, Carter celebrated with a fist pump, full of excitement, as he finally captured his first CCCoB title after being a finalist in 2018 and 2022. Rosati, also a finalist in 2022, captured his first title in his second Finals appearance, while Trivisonno and Reheer won their first titles in their debut Finals appearance. The victory by "3 Men & A Puppy" will now be etched in CCCoB history books, as they hold onto the Cup of Bocce until the 41st Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce in 2025, scheduled for August 23rd, 24th, and 25th!

Championship Sunday Sweet 16 Results
Champions - 3 Men & A Puppy (Mentor, OH), Record 7-0 (I WAS RIGHT😁): A funny team name with now a championship and a spot in the CCCoB history books. As one of my favorites, Pino Rosati, Doug Carter, Mike Trivisonno, and Ron Reeher “Ron Dawg”, now have their first title at Wickliffe and can add it to their already impressive bocce career resumes. Trivisonno & Carter continue their amazing summer run in the bocce circuit. Both now have two of the three majors titles in 2024 and both have made a finals appearance in all three events (Molisani, Rome, and Wickliffe). Getting to the finals is never easy and seizing the opportunity as the undefeated team only needing to win once was accomplished here. Congratulations to each one as this achievement can never be tarnished and their team will forever be in the bocce history books here at Wickliffe!
Finalists - BSB (Big Shot Bob’s) (Ellwood City, PA) Record 9-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): BSB, tied for the most wins at CCCoB40, with players Matt Taylor, Robert "Duey Stuey" Stuart, Anthony Capogreco, and Dante DeLisio, once again showcased their resilience and proved they are one of the most consistent teams in the bocce circuit. After losing to Palazzo 777 in the 4th round, 14-7, they battled back through the 1-loss bracket, winning the next seven games, including a decisive rematch against Palazzo 777 in the 3rd Place Match, which they won 14-5. On their path to the Finals, BSB knocked out six teams featuring former champions and tournament finalists (ABV Contractors, CPF Home Inspections, Fioritto Funeral Service, North Country Graphics, Palazzo 777, and Tripepi Consulting). Although they fell short of their ultimate goal of winning the title, their achievements and ability to overcome the challenges of a Finals run are still commendable. In other news, Dante DeLisio of BSB announced on social media that he will be stepping away from the game of bocce after the MVR tournament for personal reasons, making it both interesting and challenging for BSB to replace a teammate who has contributed significantly to their success. We will be watching BSB closely moving forward, but they should remain strong contender in 2025.
3rd - Palazzo 777 (Vaughan, CAN), Record 5-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): As I predicted, Palazzo 777 entered the tournament as the favorites in the bocce markets heading into Friday evening. The team, featuring Jose Botto, Pat Pezzin, Jason Wisniewski, and Nico Fox, dominated on both Friday and Saturday, going undefeated and holding their opponents to an average of 6.25 points in their first four matches. On Sunday, Palazzo 777, the winner of Region 2, faced off against Fioritto Funeral Service, the winner of Region 1, in the first winner’s bracket match, emerging victorious with a 14-10 win. Palazzo controlled most of the game, but two of the four frames won by Fioritto Funeral Service resulted in 3 points each (a total of 8 points). It was the first time Palazzo gave up a big frame multiple times in a match. Next, in the Winner’s Bracket Final against 3 Men & A Puppy and the 3rd Place Match against BSB, Palazzo 777 started off slow against two of the other hottest teams in the tournament. Despite their efforts to catch up, they fell short, losing 14-10 and 14-5, respectively, and were unable to reach the Finals. Overall, Palazzo 777 delivered a phenomenal performance and remained a crowd favorite throughout the tournament. I expect to see this team back in the mix for a championship again in 2025.
4th - North Country Graphics (Rome, NY), Record 9-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): North Country Graphics tied for the most wins in the tournament and quickly became one of the hottest teams after their 14-3 loss to Palazzo 777 on Saturday afternoon. NCG could have possibly reached the finals if it weren’t for one of the best game-winning rolls I’ve ever seen, delivered by BSB’s Anthony Capogreco in a thrilling 14-13 match. Eddie Emmanuele, Santino Emmanuele, Paul Louis III "PL3," and Nick Serra took down several great teams as they battled through the one-loss bracket, including a dramatic 14-13 win over the defending champions, CPF Home Inspections, and a 14-7 victory against last year's finalist Deep Water Consulting (formerly IMBS). Even though NCG played in two nail-biting one-point games, they were on a mission come Sunday, holding their opponents to an average of just 7.50 points over the next eight games after their loss.

Robert "Duey Stuey" Stuart of BSB | Jose Botto of Palazzo 777 | Santino Emmanuele of North Country Graphics
T-5th - Fioritto Funeral Service (Lyndhurst, OH), Record 4-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): FFS started out as one of my Dark Horse teams, but I mentioned don’t be surprised if they ended up battling for an undefeated spot going into Sunday, and that’s exactly what happened! Russ Mergalio, Mike Lapcevich, Robert Mittal, and Fred Sablack, winners of the Region 1 bracket, began the tournament with a strong 4-0 record, mostly dominating their region except for a narrow one-point win over Club Molisani #10 in their fourth round match. Heading into Sunday, FFS faced off against the tournament favorite, Palazzo 777. In the match things early on looked bleak when they were down 10-3, but FFS managed to battle back, winning a couple of big frames cutting the deficit down to 11-8. However, their comeback fell short as they suffered their first loss, 14-8. In their second Sunday match against BSB (Big Shot Bob’s), the game started tight at 3-3, but an 11-2 run by BSB ended FFS tournament run. A valiant effort by the Region 1 winners, as we can expect even bigger things from this team in 2025.
T-5th - Vatreni (Mentor, OH), Record 4-2 (I WAS WRONG😔): Before the tournament began, 38 teams were selected in the bocce markets, but Vatreni wasn't one of them, making them a "Field" team heading into Friday evening. The Region 3 winners, comprised of Tonci Viskovic, Jerko Zovko, Pero Barac, and Renato Patete, three Croatians and one Italian former CCCoB champion, entered Sunday undefeated after starting the tournament with two narrow 1-point victories over Alta House and Formica Plumbing & Sewer, followed by wins over Brassell Insurance and Matrice Club #1, ultimately building a strong 4-0 record. Their winning streak ended Sunday morning when they faced the eventual champions, 3 Men & A Puppy, falling 14-8. In the T-5th match, Vatreni fought hard against North Country Graphics but ultimately came up short in a 14-10 defeat. Their impressive run certainly did not go unnoticed, as they advanced the furthest out of any Field team. Come 2025, this team will definitely be on everyone's radar.
T-7th - Lorenzino’s (Girard, OH), Record 6-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): A last-minute roster adjustment didn’t faze Lorenzino's one bit. Dante Chiovitti, Matthew Estes, Brett Wiedenthal, and Nick Amendola were able to come together quickly, even with Wiedenthal & Amendola joining at the last moment, and racked up the fourth-most wins at this year's tournament. They started strong, winning their first three matches against Adriatic Sea, BMR Contracting, and Pontelandolfo #2. Their winning streak set them up for a showdown with the eventual champions, 3 Men & A Puppy. Lorenzino’s gave them one of their toughest tests of the weekend, staying competitive throughout the match but ultimately losing 14-10. Despite dropping to the 1-loss bracket, they remained determined and continued their impressive run. Their next match against Alta House was a nail-biter, with Lorenzino's pulling off a narrow 14-13 victory, which earned them a spot in the top 16 on Championship Sunday. Sunday presented another challenge, but Lorenzino's rose to the occasion, winning their first two matches, 14-11 against Nuovi Amici and a dominant 14-0 over Team Continenza. However, their journey was halted by North Country Graphics, who took the wind out of Lorenzino’s sails. The game started off close, but Lorenzino's struggled to gain any momentum while North Country Graphics capitalized on every opportunity, leading to a 14-5 defeat. Despite the loss, Lorenzino's six major wins throughout the tournament are a testament to their skill, and resilience. They will certainly be a team to watch in CCCoB41 next year.
T-7th - Tripepi Consulting (Wickliffe, OH), Record 5-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): Another favorite of mine, Tripepi Consulting, made a strong run to Sunday. Comprised of Tim Tripepi, Ron Capogreco, Pete Melaragno, and Frank DiCillo, the team started the tournament with an impressive 4-0 record. They secured significant victories over The Bocce Bros, WaterTight Roofing Systems, and Nuovi Amici, showcasing their skills. Their performance established them as one of the top contenders early on. However, their momentum was halted late Saturday night in the Region 4 Finals when they suffered a narrow 14-13 defeat against the eventual champions, 3 Men & A Puppy. This loss dropped them into the 1-loss bracket, but secured them a spot in Championship Sunday Top 16. On Sunday, the team bounced back with a strong showing. They defeated Club Molisani #10 with a close 14-12 win, advancing them to the T-7th match. Despite their valiant efforts, they fell short against the eventual tournament finalists, BSB, in a hard-fought 14-11 battle. Tripepi Consulting’s performance through a tough region and their nearly undefeated run up to Sunday makes this team a serious contender once again at CCCoB41.

Tonci Viskovic, Pero Barac, and Renato Patete of Vatreni watching teammate Jerko Zovko throw.
T-9th - Club Molisani #10 (Wickliffe, OH), Record 5-2 (I WAS WRONG😔): Club Molisani #10 was another team that flew under my radar but made an impressive run to Sunday. This talented squad comprising Val Frabotta, Anthony Frabotta, Val DiFranco, Aldo Campellone, and Sal Santillo went five deep on their roster, which nearly propelled them to the Region 1 Finals. However, they fell just short in a thrilling 14-13 match against Fioritto Funeral Service. Following this narrow defeat, Club Molisani #10 had to fight for a spot on Sunday, facing off against Adelio’s Contracting. They showcased full control in that match, securing a decisive 14-4 victory to advance to the final day of the tournament. Sunday presented another chance to move further through the bracket, but it wasn't an easy path. They faced a tough battle against WaterTight Roofing Systems, ultimately prevailing in a hard-fought 14-10 victory. Their next match was yet another nail-biter against Tripepi Consulting, a game that went down to the wire. Unfortunately, this time Club Molisani #10 found themselves on the losing end, falling 14-12 and finishing tied for 9th place. This all Club Molisani Charities member team put on a remarkable tournament performance with five impressive wins. I'm confident we'll see this determined squad ready for another deep run at CCCoB41!
T-9th Matrice Club #1 (Mentor, OH), Record 3-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): Out of my 10 sleeper teams, three were just one game away from reaching Sunday, but it was Matrice Club #1 that made it through. Lou Fatica, Alex Fatica, Silvano Ferenac, and Mario DeLillo started the tournament strong with a 3-0 record, including a solid 14-8 victory over last year's finalists, Deep Water Consulting. The father-son shooting duo of Lou and Alex, combined with the precise pointing from Mario and Silvano, propelled them to the Region 3 Finals, where they were unfortunately defeated by Vatreni, 14-8. Sunday brought another opportunity, as they battled fiercely with the eventual tournament finalists, BSB, in a thrilling 14-13 nail-biter. It was a fantastic showing by Matrice Club #1, demonstrating their talents on the court.
T-9th - MVR (Youngstown, OH), Record 4-2 (I WAS WRONG😔): MVR was another team that flew under my radar. This talented group from Youngstown, OH, comprising Bob Ferraro, Marco Marinucci, Darren Landis, and Frank Popio; started as one of the hottest teams in the tournament. Their strong performance led them to a 4-0 record, with notable victories over TC Construction and Dirtbox Cowboys, putting them in a prime position to win Region 2 and enter Sunday undefeated. However, to achieve this, they had to face the tournament favorites, Palazzo 777, late on Saturday night. MVR began the match a bit slow but managed to work their way back into contention before Palazzo 777 made a final push to secure a 14-9 win. This loss dropped MVR into the 1-loss bracket, but the squad had already clinched a spot into Championship Sunday and would get another opportunity on the final day of the tournament. Their first Sunday match was against North Country Graphics, who had just defeated Deep Water Consulting 14-7. Unfortunately, MVR's momentum from Friday and Saturday didn't carry over, and they were defeated 14-0 by North Country Graphics. MVR overall record of 4-2, finished T-9th out of 104 teams. It was a great run for this Youngstown group, who will surely be ready to compete again in CCCoB41.
T-9th Team Continenza (Wickliffe, OH), Record 3-2 (I WAS WRONG😔): This local Wickliffe Italian-American Club team wasn't on my radar, but they proved their resilience throughout the bracket, earning a spot in the top 16 on Championship Sunday. The Continenza family team composed of Tony, Vince, Anthony, and Sal Continenza showed incredible skill and teamwork. The father-and-three-sons squad started the tournament in the bottom of Region 1 with three straight wins, thanks to Vince and Sal's sharp shooting and Tony and Anthony's consistent pointing all weekend. Their early success earned them a spot in the Region 1 Finals against Fioritto Funeral Service. Unfortunately, the momentum they built over the weekend was interrupted in the Regional Finals, where they were defeated 14-2 by FFS. Team Continenza had another opportunity to advance further on Sunday morning in the T-9th match against Lorenzino’s. Despite a 14-0 loss, the final score didn't reflect the true success and determination Team Continenza displayed throughout the tournament. This bocce family will be looking to build on their performance and take another step forward in 2025.

Sal, Tony, Anthony, and Vince Continenza of Team Continenza celebrate advancing to Sunday.
T-13th ABV Contractors (Willoughby, OH), Record 5-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): One of my favorite teams, ABV Contractors, was pushed into the 1-loss bracket early after a first-round defeat by one of my sleeper teams, TC Construction, who won 14-10 in the tournament's opening matches. However, Michael Frabotta, Dennis Strnad, Anthony Croce, and Dom Aveni bounced back impressively, winning their next five matches and securing their ticket to Championship Sunday with a strong 14-4 victory over Dirtbox Cowboys. During their winning streak, they managed to hold their opponents to an average of just 6.6 points per game. On Championship Sunday, their first match was a big battle against the eventual CCCoB finalist, BSB. It was a very tight match with several lead changes and both teams keeping it close. Unfortunately, a narrow 14-13 defeat stopped ABV's winning streak, finishing them with a 5-2 record. Their impressive recovery to make it to Sunday is certainly an achievement that should not be overlooked!
T-13th - Deep Water Consulting (Beaver Falls, PA), Record 4-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): The 2023 CCCoB Finalists were on a mission to return to the finals and avenge last year's Finals loss. The tournament began promisingly for Deep Water Consulting (DWC). Jimmy "The Bull" Pisano, Sean New, Vern Kurtz, and Danny Pisano with a strong 3-0 record, holding their first three opponents to an average of just 8.33 points per game and maintaining control throughout most of their matches. However, in their fourth match against Matrice Club #1, they struggled to find their rhythm, resulting in a 14-6 defeat. Facing elimination, DWC then squared off against TC Construction with a trip to Sunday on the line. In a back-and-forth battle, DWC eventually took control and won 14-10, securing their spot in Championship Sunday with a chance to still fight for a finals return. In their first Sunday match against North Country Graphics, DWC tried to keep pace with one of the hottest teams in the tournament but ultimately fell short, losing 14-7. Despite their best efforts to replicate last year's success, it was still a respectable run in a highly competitive tournament.
T-13th - Nuovi Amici (Lexington, KY), Record 4-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): With the score tied at 13-13, the last ball of the game would determine who advanced to Sunday. The crucial pallino shot by Chris Chmielewski went off the court, leaving everyone in suspense about what might have been. However, on the reset frame, Chmielewski and his teammates, Brian Polantz, Mike Hilvers, and Scott Painter, delivered under pressure and secured a 14-13 victory over Your Key In Real Estate, clinching their spot into Championship Sunday matches. Earlier in the tournament, Nuovi Amici started strong with a 3-0 record before suffering a 14-12 defeat to Tripepi Consulting in their fourth match. On Sunday, they faced a close game against Lorenzino’s, which ended in a 14-11 loss. Despite the setbacks, this team has now reached Sunday in back-2-back years and will be aiming to make it three in a row in 2025.
T-13th Watertight Roofing Systems (Hubbard, OH), Record 5-2 (I WAS RIGHT😁): Joe Palumbo, Eugene Ciasullo, AJ DiNunzio, and Mike Pisano were a dark horse team I had my eye on, and they certainly lived up to their potential. Team Watertight Roofing Systems started strong in the tournament, securing victories over Goombaz and FP Supplies before running into one of my favorites, Tripepi Consulting, and losing 14-8. However, the loss didn't derail them; they bounced back to win their next three games, punching their ticket to Sunday with a definitive 14-4 win over JC Mechanical Heating & Cooling. Sunday offered a fresh start, but unfortunately, their three-game winning streak was halted by Club Molisani #10, in a 14-10 defeat. With an overall record of 5-2 and a Sunday appearance, this team showed great chemistry throughout the tournament. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make another deep run next year.

CCCoB40 Stats 📊
Now that we have gone over the top 16 teams and their accomplishments of the tournament. I wanted to highlight some final stats before moving on to the 41st Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce on August 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2025. As we gear up for CCCoB41 in August 2025, the anticipation builds for another exciting and competitive tournament as teams will undoubtedly take these lessons and insights into their preparations, promising yet another thrilling edition of the Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce.
1. Finals Score Summary: The 2024 Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce (CCCoB) finals saw a thrilling conclusion as 3 Men & A Puppy clinched the championship with a strong finish. The match spanned 16 frames, with 3 Men & A Puppy ending on an impressive 8-0 run to secure the victory. The final score of 16-11 marks the first time since 2016 that a finals match ended 16-11, when Adelio’s Contracting defeated Rainbow Creek by the same margin. For the members of 3 Men & A Puppy, this victory marked their first championship title. Here’s the updated finals record for each team member:
Doug Carter: 1-2
Pino Rosati: 1-1
Ron Reheer: 1-0
Mike Trivisonno: 1-0

2. Location Results: The results of the 2024 Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce (CCCoB) reflect a diverse range of team entries based on their entry location. Here are the key findings from the tournament
Ohio had the largest representation in the tournament, entering 70 of the 104 teams. A significant number of these teams were from the Cleveland area, but there were also entries from several other cities throughout the state. Despite having the most teams in the tournament, Ohio teams won only 50% of their games.
New York teams performed exceptionally well, winning the most games among the non-Ohio teams. New York's strong showing demonstrated the competitive bocce talent outside Ohio.
Kentucky had a notable performance with a single team that posted a 4-2 record. This gave Kentucky the highest win percentage among all states in this year's tournament, highlighting their impressive effort despite limited representation.
Although Ohio had the majority of teams and dominated the Top 16 spots overall, out-of-state teams made a significant impact. Three of the top 4 spots in the tournament were captured by teams from outside Ohio, showcasing the growing competitiveness beyond the home state. These results emphasize the geographical diversity and high level of competition in the CCCoB, with strong performances from both local Ohio teams and those traveling from across the country.
